Operation Blue Santa collects toys and donations every year that are distributed by the Optimist Club and the Wheat Ridge Police Department during the holidays to families in need.
On Saturday, Nov. 30, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Lakeside Walmart, the Wheat Ridge Police Department (WRPD), the Lakeside Police Department and the Wheat Ridge Optimist Club will host Operation Blue Santa.
This year WRPD's Blue Santa, aka Jeffcom 911 Communications Manager Chris Garramone, and his “elves” will be collecting donations at the Walmart at Lakeside, 5957 W 44th Ave., on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. WRPD, Lakeside Police and the Optimists hope to fill patrol cars to the brim with toys and gifts. They will be on hand for pictures with children and to visit with them about their wish lists.
In addition to new toys, monetary donations will be collected and used to purchase gift cards for children’s clothing and food. Throughout the year, police officers are in contact with families who might need a little help during the holidays, especially those with young children and teens. The Optimist Club collects those names and addresses for gift delivery that takes place on Saturday, Dec. 14. Volunteers are encouraged to come out and members of the Optimist Club for gift wrapping at Wheat Ridge City Hall on Dec. 13 from 4 - 6:30 p.m.
“Operation Blue Santa is truly a wonderful way the police and the community come together for a great common cause,” stated Charley Ault, Optimist Club.
Blue Santa came to life a number of years ago when a custom Santa suit was created by a local seamstress using the dark blue color of traditional police uniforms. Annually, a member of the Wheat Ridge Police Department dons the suit, beard, hat and boots to serve as Santa for Operation Blue Santa.
New toys and cash donations will also be accepted at the Wheat Ridge Police Department at 7500 W. 29th Ave. from Nov. 25 – Dec. 13, 2019.
