1. Are property owners required to shovel their sidewalks when it snows?

The City of Wheat Ridge does not have a specific Ordinance requiring the sidewalks to be cleared of snow. However, the City requests that property owners clear snow and ice from the sidewalks adjacent to their property as soon as possible following a snow storm.

2. When will my street be plowed?

The City treats pre-determined first and second priority roadways with deicing materials prior to snow storms to prevent formation of snowpack and ice. First priority roadways (red routes) include main streets, collectors, routes to schools, firehouses, and hospital accesses. Second priority roadways (green routes) include minor collector streets and third priority (blue routes) include hilly residential streets. The City will plow residential streets only after there is an accumulation of at least 12 inches of snow.

3. Who do I call to report a pothole in the street?

Pothole repair is performed by the Public Works Operation Division. You may report potholes to Operations at (303) 205-7600 or call Engineering at (303) 235-2861 and the information will be forwarded to Operations for scheduling. Potholes are usually patched within 24 hours of a call.

4. If I have a Contractor License why would I also need a Municipal Contractor License?

The Contractor License is issued through the Building Division of the Community Development Department and is for work on private property, generally for building construction.

The Municipal Contactor License is issued through the Public Works Department and is required to perform construction in street right of way.

The City’s right of way/infrastructure work has different standards/requirements than codes followed for building construction. These two licenses require different areas of knowledge for construction. The Municipal Contractor License also requires a bond in addition to liability and workers compensation insurance. These licenses and requirements help to assure that the contractor is qualified to perform the different types of work and comply with the City codes/standards and specifications/requirements for work in the COWR.

5. How can I report a property in the neighborhood that has trash scattered everywhere?

Wheat Ridge Ordinances require property owners to maintain their property in such a manner that there are no public nuisances or safety issues. Report subject properties to the Police Department's Community Services Division at:

6. Does Wheat Ridge have a City Clean-up Program?

The City has a Large Item Pick-Up Program that is offered once a year, typically in the Spring. Program information is found on the web site. The Program is advertised on our City web page prior to the scheduled pickup date(s). Information on the program is also advertised on Comcast Cable--Channel 8 (local government programming), in the Wheat Ridge City newsletter and in the Wheat Ridge Transcript for several weeks prior to the scheduled dates. 7. Who do I call to report a street light that has burned out or is not working?

City street lights are owned and maintained by Xcel Energy. To report a light outage, call the Public Works Operation Division at (303) 205-7600. 8. What do I do if I want to have a street light installed on my street?

The first step in the process is to call the Engineering Division at (303) 235-2861. Engineering will evaluate the need for additional illumination. If it is determined that a street light is warranted, a petition form will be sent to you to obtain signatures from property owners who will be affected by the new light (This information will be provided to you.) Once the form is returned to Engineering, a cost estimate is requested from Xcel Energy. If the cost is acceptable and funds are available, payment will be made and Xcel will schedule installation.

9. Who is responsible for maintenance of the trees growing in the right of way?

Trees in the City right of way are maintained by the City. Trees on private property are maintained by the property owner. Tree branches that hang into the right of way from private property are the responsibility of the property owner; however, if branches are creating a safety issue, the City will request the property owner resolve the problem. If the City has to trim privately owned trees, all costs involved would be charged back to the property owner. 10. Who is responsible for removing or cutting the weeds in the right of way?

Wheat Ridge City Ordinance requires the adjacent property owner to maintain the strip of right of way adjacent to their property. This would include mowing, sweeping of sidewalks, and the removal of debris and trash. For more information, contact Public Works at (303) 235-2861.

11. Where do I call to report someone dumping their car oil in the storm drain?

12. I just moved to Wheat Ridge. Who do I call to schedule my trash pickup?

The City of Wheat Ridge is not a full service City. Private companies provide trash pickup service. Non City Services

13. I just moved to Wheat Ridge. Who do I talk to about having the water & sewer transferred to my name?

The City owns the streets where the water & sewer lines are located, however the City does not own/operate the water and sewer systems. The utilities are owned by Special Districts and companies.
